Furniture Dollies Make Moving Homes a Breeze

If you've just bought a new home and are planning to move in the near future, you might be wondering how you are going to go about it. You can either pay some one to do the hard work for you or consider doing it yourself. Moving house is now much easier, especially with all the great tools you have to help lighten the load; also doing it yourself will save you money, which you can use on your family in the future. So what do you need to get started, you'll want to buy packing materials, boxes, sealing tape and markers, as well as spending a little on the transportation, but the most important item to buy is a furniture dolly.

This great time saving contraption can be rented or bought from your local home depot. They are cheap and simple devices that will substantially minimize your moving time. The great thing about furniture dollies is that they allow two people to easily move a large item of furniture like a sofa or master bed with very little effort needed.

You more than likely haven't heard of a furniture dolly before, they are used by all the professional moving companies and come in a range of different forms. The most common dolly type is made from a flat rectangular piece of wood board or a plastic/metal frame, the surface of the board is usually covered in a soft carpet material to reduce the risk of your furniture getting scratched during the moving process. On the bottom side of the board or frame there will be 3 or 4 swivel coaster wheels attached for easy maneuverability.
If you stop into your local home depot store you will find a variety of these furniture dolly trolleys for sale, each with its own special feature to make moving easier for you. To help give you an idea of what to expect in terms of choices, here are 3 dollies to get you started:

(1) Adjustable twin skate dolly - Not all pieces of furniture are perfectly cubical, so someone came up with this ingenious design. It is made up of 2 smaller wooden square boards, each with 4 coaster wheels attached to the bottom. These are both fixed to two ends of a central bar and can be moved closer or further apart from each other along the length of the bar. What this means is that you can easily adjust the width of the two platforms to fit oddly shaped items making this a very flexible furniture dolly.

(2) Aluminum dollies - Most of the older forms of furniture dolly were made from either hard wood or steel, these are both quite heavy materials that adds weight to the moving process and makes them harder to use. After people started complaining of dollies being too heavy someone came up with the idea of using aluminum, which is both very strong and extra lightweight, now pushing your furniture around is a breeze. The only downside is the $300 a piece price tag.

(3) 3-wheeled steel dolly corners - This small light weight furniture dolly was specifically designed to move very large square objects with corners, such as large dinning tables, beds or refrigerators. They are simply triangular shaped metal dollies with 3 coaster wheels in each corner, there is no need to lift the entire piece of furniture, just lift each individual corner separately. The major benefit to this furniture dolly is that it is cheap, so you can buy several in one go.

Modern Furniture Around the World

The first pieces of modern furniture were designed and manufactured in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While the boldest departures from classical furniture appeared before the middle of the 20th century, furniture continues to evolve today. Modern furniture is characterized by functional design with clean, simple lines-a sharp contrast to the heavily ornamented decorative furniture that was popular for centuries. European designers introduced the unique styles, but interest in modern furniture quickly spread to Los Angeles, New York, and other American cities.

Through the use of new methods and materials, furniture design combines art with technology. Designers use innovative materials such as plastics, molded plywood, and steel-all suitable for mass production. By decreasing cost and increasing the availability of pieces, mass production brought modern designs within the reach of ordinary people. Fine furniture was no longer a luxury only for the wealthy; rather than symbolizing old wealth, power, and the past, contemporary furniture is populist and present-oriented.

Modern furniture designers span the globe. The famous chair designs of the German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe were considered functional art when they came on the design scene in the 1920s. Isamu Noguchi, of American and Japanese descent, used his talents in landscape design and sculpture to create furniture with organic, natural lines. Irish-born Eileen Gray combined tubular steel and glass into a strikingly simple adjustable table. The Hungarian modernist Marcel Breuer employed industrial production principles to create simple modular forms. American poet and millwright Herman Miller was one of the first to design comfortable and functional office furniture; the company he founded now operates in over 40 countries around the world.

Different countries exert varying influences over modern furniture designs. European sofa beds, for example, are much simpler in style and mechanics than the typical American sofa beds. Minimalist lines and effortless operation make for trouble-free and uncomplicated pieces. Modern Italian furniture includes platform beds that appear to be floating above the floor. Modern Japanese designs tend to be organic, reflecting the natural world.

The reach of modern design is nearly universal. For today's fast-paced lives in urban centers like Chicago and Los Angeles, contemporary furniture is a perfect fit. It is efficient, neat, accessible and adaptable to typical city homes with limited space. But the demand for modern furniture has spread well beyond the cultural centers of the country. Spacious rural and suburban homes provide open areas for showcasing the elegant and clean lines of modern furniture. The practicality and comfort of contemporary pieces has by now trumped any reservations about what were once considered strange and alien designs.
For furnishing homes and businesses nothing tops modern furniture. It blends well with other styles, where it can play a background role to more traditional and ornate pieces, yet it can make a strong statement in an all-modern interior design. Contemporary furnishings are cool but not cold and simple but not boring. And because modern design is still evolving, the best is yet to come.

Purchasing Pet Safe Patio Furniture Cushions

Bringing a new pet into your home can be a very exciting time. This is a new little life that you're going to be in love with and is going to love you unconditionally back. But, in addition to the fun and joy of having a new family member, you also need to make sure that you've taken the proper precautions throughout your home to keep your pet and your furniture both happy and healthy.

Most people who are getting a new pet walk around inside their house and consider any problems that could be caused with a new pet. They look at anything that could break or ways to protect their furniture and other items from getting messy or damaged by the new addition to the family. But quite often that's where they stop their pet preparing process. They forget to take a step into the out of home entertaining area, or patio.
Now you may be thinking that the patio has outdoor furniture that's meant to put up with the elements and anything else asked of it. Well, that would be true, however, that still doesn't mean it's safe for your pet to use. You see, pets can damage your patio furniture in three ways. The first is by the smell they give off that could sink into your patio furniture cushions. The second is by the hair they're going to shed that can get stuck on and in your furniture and make it look less attractive. And the third is that those claws that they have at the end of those paws can be quite damaging to many types of fabric.

So how do you keep your patio furniture and your pet living well together? Well, part of the answer may be in making sure that the patio furniture cushions that you have can handle the threats your cat brings to the table. When it comes to the smell of your new dog, you won't notice it right away. Most dogs do have a bit of a scent. This can become more pronounced if you give them a bath or let them play in the pool or other body of water.
If they jump on your patio furniture while they're a little smelly, that smell can sink into the fabric of the furniture as well as the cushion. The best way to counter this is to make sure that you have washable cushions in place so when you start to notice that smell, you can remove the cushion covers and toss them in the washing machine and then wash out the cushions, making them seem like new again.

The next thing you have to deal with this all that pet hair. Almost all pets shed, some more than others. The problem becomes when their hair gets on your furniture. It doesn't always sit on the top of the furniture so you can brush it right off. Sometimes, it seems to embed itself in the furniture so deeply that the only way to get rid of it is to pick each hair out individually. The other option is to have very unattractive furniture. Instead, as you're shopping for patio furniture cushions the next time, look for a material that is resistant to this type of problem. You want to avoid materials with thick textures as those in grab all of the fallen pet hair more readily than a smoother and sleeker material.v

And finally you want to avoid your dog's nails from doing damage to your furniture. Generally, what this means is making sure that you have heavy-duty material that your patio furniture covers are made out of. This way, their nails will not be able to easily dig through the material and rip it.
